PCGS Confirms Major New 1798 Dollar Variety

Professional Coin Grading Service (www.PCGS.com) has authenticated a long-speculated but never-before-confirmed new obverse and reverse die combination on a 1798 Draped Bust silver dollar. This new die marriage was struck from known obverse and reverse dies, but this is first known example with this combination.

The obverse die used for striking this coin is the one used for 1798 B-13, BB-108 and for 1798 B-10, BB-109. The Heraldic Eagle design reverse is the die used for 1798 B-18, BB-103 and 1798 B-22, BB-104. This discovery coin is confirmation of a new die marriage,” said PCGS President Don Willis.

It is always exciting when major new discoveries are made. There may still be many great things yet to be found and enjoyed in numismatics.”

PCGS attributes early U.S. dollars, 1794 to 1804, by both Bolender (B) and Bowers-Borckardt (BB) reference numbers. The new die marriage has been referenced as 1798 B-34, BB-126.

Collector/dealer recalls 1796 Draped Bust, 16 Stars Obverse, Small Eagle, half dollar in upcoming Pogue auction

The Rogers-Whitney-Pogue Gem 1796 Half Dollar with 16 Obverse Stars

This week I received my copy of Q. David Bowers new book, Treasures from the D. Brent Pogue Rare Coin Cabinet / A National Legacy. The book highlights 100 of the rarest coins from the Pogue Collection. The book is formatted with one coin for every two pages, with additional enlarged photos of the obverse and reverse for select coins. The coins were numbered 1-100 in the book.

In November 1995 I received my copy of an auction catalog titled, “Numisma ’95 / Numismatic Rarities for the Collector.” Numisma ’95 was a public auction sale held jointly by David W. Akers, Rarcoa Inc. and Stack’s Rare Coins.  Stack’s offered Lots 1001-1751 in Session 1 of the sale on November 29, 1995. Among the Stack’s offerings were a number of coins from the Leland Rogers Collection. I reviewed my copy of the Numisma ‘95 sale catalog this week.  Unfortunately, at the time of the sale I was unable to view the lots in person.

W. DAVID PERKINS ANA 1127284

A lifelong collector and amateur genealogist discovers that numismatics is in his blood.

The collecting instinct is strong in Dave Perkins. You might even say numismatics is in his DNA. The 58-year-old Colorado executive, husband and father of four began his foray into the world of coins simply enough, but the more he learned, the more he realized that numismatics is an indelible part of who he is.

Silverman Collection of Silver Dollars to Anchor Heritage’s CSNS Signature Sale

Dallas, TX -- The Morris Silverman Collection of Silver Dollars will anchor Heritage’s Central States Numismatic Society Signature Sale in Columbus, Ohio. The coins, which are featured in a separate, full-color catalog, will lead off Session One of the auction at 7:00 PM on Thursday, April 25 in the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Room D-130.

“It is difficult to choose a favorite coin from a collection that contains so may fabulous rarities,” stated Greg Rohan, Heritage’s Executive VP. “Nevertheless, the single most important coin in the Silverman Collection is certainly the 1884 Trade Dollar. One of just 10 coins known, this specimen is pedigreed to the collection of Ambassador and Mrs. R. Henry Norweb. Prior to their ownership, the coin was the property of Egypt’s King Farouk. The coin is certified PR63 PCGS, and it certain to entice spirited bidding by both floor bidders and Internet participants.”
