1838 50C GR-1, JR-1 LDS Reeded Edge Capped Bust Half Dollar "HALF DOL." on Rev PCGS AU53

This is a fun coin to view and study! It came from a European collection and has been store in a 2X2 envelope since the 1960s, and was only recently graded by PCGS. The reverse die is virtually shattered, with a number of die breaks bisecting the reverse. There is also a die break on the obverse from the rim under star 7 to Liberty's forehead to above the eye. According to the Condition Census in Reeded Edge Half Dollars 1836-1839 by Dick Graham this coin is tied for 8th highest graded in the CC. Gray gold toning over lustrous surfaces on both sides.
