1836 Capped Bust H10C Large 5C LM-1.2, V-5, R-4 NGC MS65 (Ex. Pittman)
Large 5C Type
Ex. Pittman Collection
This 1836 Capped Bust Half Dime in NGC MS65 is a WOW Coin, with rarity, provenance, beautiful colors, Proof-like surfaces, and a retained cud on the reverse. This coin has it all!
One can trace this coin to the October 1997 Pittman Sale (Lot 447 where it sold for $6,050) and prior to a May 1952 David Bullowa auction as Lot 129. It writing about the coin for the Pittman Auction, David Akers wrote, "This is a very special quality coin. It is fully struck, except stars 3 and 4 [which are opposite the cud], and has absolutely superb medium multicolored blue, greenish-gold, violet, and russet toning. The obverse is fully Proof-like, the reverse is mostly frosty. Pittman purchased the coin as a Proof from the Bullowa sale on 5/24/52 for $9. This is the third specimen listed in Breen's Proof Encyclopedia, and a coin Breen personally examined and determined to be a Proof, a determination with which I disagree."
Regardless of its present status as a business strike (as determined by NGC and labeled as such in an older NGC holder), this Proof-like Capped Bust Half dime is simply a beauty.
