1831 10C JR-2 Capped Bust Dime JR-2 PCGS AU55 (Ex. David J. Davis)
Ex. David J. Davis (with tag)
David J. Davis was one of the five authors of Early United States Dimes 1796-1837 and was a founder of and the first President of JRCS. This specimen of the 1831 JR-2 Dime is from his collection. Davis graded this coin as "Unc." and considered it to be in the Condition Census for the JR-2 die marriage. The authors of the book noted at the time of publication, "This variety is clearly scarce and difficult to locate in EF condition. Finest seen is EF-40 (Purchased from dealer's stock in Aug. 1978)." The 2015 JRCS CB Dime Census shows two example in Mint State (MS65 and MS64), followed by four examples in AU55 followed by two examples grading XF45.
This coin is well struck and is toned an attrative medium gray over lustrous surfaces on both sides, with some darker toning about the peripherals. The David J. Davis pedigree is on the PCGS holder and Davis's tag is included.
