1819 25C Small 9 B-4, R-4+ Capped Bust Quarter PCGS XF45
Small 9 Type
This is one of my favorite Capped Bust Quarter die marriages, with many different die crack configurations forming on the obverse. This specimen is struck from a relatively early die state (a) despite having a die break from the bottom of the date through all the right stars and ending in the field mid-way above Liberty's Cap!
This die marriage is virtually unknown in Mint State, with only a single PCGS MS62 example known. This example in PCGS XF45 is one of only four examples in XF45 (and with only two listed in XF40), with the four examples listed in XF45 being the 12th to 15th examples finest examples known in the Condition Census in the book Early Quarters of the United States Mint 1796-1838.
This coin was purchased from a long time JRCS Capped Bust Quarter collector. The obverse is toned mostly in medium gray with a touch of blue, and the reverse in nice shades of gray and gold.
