This is the finest known example of this R-5 die marriage, and the only Mint State example ever seen by me in my 33 years of researching and collecting the early dollars 1794-1803. I first saw this specimen in a dealer's case at a major show in the late 1990s. I looked at this coin, recognized it as a Condition Rarity, left the dealer's table and came back 15 minutes later. It had been sold. I next saw it at Heritage Auctions when I was consulting on and cataloging over 150 higher grade early dollars for Heritage. This was the collection of Michael Herring which was sold by Heritage in January 2002. Warren Miller bought this specimen in this sale (Lot 7202). It was graded NGC MS62 at this time, and was later crossed into a PCGS MS61 holder where it resides today. It is struck from a late state of the dies with some thin die cracks noted on both sides.
