This lovely 1794 Flowing Hair Half Dime was offered as Lot 1003 in a David Bullowa sale on May 24, 1952. It was bought in the Bullowa sale by noted collector John Jay Pittman.  It was part of the Pittman Collection for the next 45 years until offered as Lot 424 in the October 1997 David Akers Numismatics, Inc. The John Jay Pittman Collection Selected Numismatic Rarities (Sale) Part I where it was graded as Choice Uncirculated and described as,

"Sharply struck and well centered with very attractive blue, greenish-gold, and russet toing.  A few tiny "slide marks" on Liberty's cheek, and a few marks in the fields as well as several spots.  The overall appearance of the coin is excellent and is very close to Mint State; in fact, JJP purchased this coin as Uncirculated from a David Bullowa sale on 5/24/52 as Lot 1018 for $74." [Please note that there are no notable spots that can be seen by me on the coin or in the Pittman Sale plate photos, even when looking with 10X glass.]

JRCS Hall of Fame Collector Collector I. Edward Price purchased this 1794 Flowing Hair half dime for his collection directly from the October 1997 Pittman Sale.  This coin was plated in both black & white (enlarged) and in color in the sale catallog.  Importantly, Ed Price had one of the few complete collections of early half dimes 1792 to 1837 that has ever been assembled.  NGC stated in a press release titled, "NGC certifes early half dime collection"  in Numismatic News May 6, 2003 that,

"A set of early half dimes has been certifed by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation of America.  The Ed Price Collection is the only known complete set, 1794-1805, including all varieties.  NGC explained that every known variety is present, and pointed out that all 31 coins in this colleciton were plate coins for the reference Federal Half Dimes 1792-1837...."

This 1794 Half Dime was graded by NGC as MS-60.

Ed Price collected the early half dimes, dimes, and quarter eagle's by die marriage. His early half dime collection was sold privately in 2003 by dealer Stuart Levine, including this coin, allowing Price to focus more of hls time and resources on the early dimes and quarter eagles.  Price's dime and quarter eagle collection was later sold by Heritage Auction Gallieries July 30 - August 3, 2008.

This 1794 LM-2 FH Half Dime is an R-5 die marriage and is the Plate Coin in the book Federal Half Dimes 1792-1837 by Russell Logan and John W. McCloskey.  It is CAC Approved.
