This is an attractive and high grade example of the 1834 Small 4 Red Book and PCGS Registry Type. The obverse has the "small perfect 4" in the date. The author's of Early United States Dimes 1796 - 1837 noted when the book was first published in 1984, "...At least five specimens exist in mint state. Finest seen is MS-63...." Today more examples are known in mint state than there were in 1984, but this variety has proven over time to be quite rare in the higher mint state grades. If you look at PCGS prices in CoinFacts you will see the price of the 1834 Small 4 Dime more than triples from MS64 to MS65 with no more than 6 examples graded PCGS MS65, two in PCGS MS66, and one in PCGS MS67. In fact there are no auction records in CoinFacts for any examples graded PCGS MS65. This example has very nice color, lustre, eye appeal, and surfaces for the grade.
